The AI Gender Gap: Why Women Need to Lean In

The AI Gender Gap: Are We Leaving Women Behind?

A recent study in The Economist (see comments) revealed a concerning trend: women are 16-20% less likely to use AI tools than men, even in the same jobs. As an AI advisor and fractional CMO, I’ve seen AI level the playing field, but we can’t ignore this widening gap.

Some key takeaways:

  • This gender gap persists across industries: only 1 in 3 female teachers use AI at work, compared to 1 in 2 male teachers. For software developers, about 2 in 3 men use AI, but less than half of women do.

  • High-achieving women are less likely to use AI. The researchers suggest this might be due to self-imposed restrictions, with one describing it as a “good girl thing” – the idea that “I have to go through this pain, I have to do it on my own and I shouldn’t cheat and take short-cuts.”

  • Interestingly, companies value women with AI skills more, offering them 8% higher salaries, a premium not extended to men.

This matters because AI is democratizing tech with just natural language, no coding required. Companies value employees who can guide AIs responsibly. For AI to benefit all of humanity, we need diverse voices influencing it.

To Sandy Carter, Allie K. Miller, Tahnee Perry, Lara Shackelford, Jessica Hreha, Erin Mills, Cathy McPhillips, Jillyn Johnson, Katie Robbert, Rachel Woods, Debi Davis, Lauren Morgenstein Schiavone, Nicole Leffer, Celeste Yamile 🤖, Helen Baptist, Jill Axline, Wendy White, Kimber Spradlin, Susan Westwater, Carol-Lyn Jardine, Baylee Jost, Megan Ratcliff, Maryrose Lyons, and more, you’re not just using the tech responsibly, you’re blazing trails.

My call to action for women in tech (and beyond):

  • Embrace AI literacy. It’s critical for making informed decisions in our careers, businesses, and society.

  • Lean in. In this AI era, we’re all learners. No room for impostor syndrome and judgment as no one is an expert. Your voice and perspective are invaluable.

  • Take up space. Participate in AI discussions, contribute to projects, and share your unique insights.

  • Seek out training and mentorship. Don’t let a perceived lack of expertise hold you back. Many organizations like the Marketing AI Institute, AI Marketing Forum, The AI Exchange, and Institute Of Ai Studies, offer resources to help you get started. Also listen to AI podcasts like Leveraging AI, FutureCraft Marketing, and The Artificial Intelligence Show

  • Challenge the “good girl” mindset. Using AI tools responsibly isn’t cheating. You guide AI with your unique expertise, knowledge, and data to get the most out of it, making your work faster, better, and innovative

Remember that the rising tide lifts all boats. By learning and sharing together, we can close this gap. The field of AI is young, making this the perfect time for women to make their mark.

What steps are you taking to embrace AI? How can we better support women in gaining AI literacy?

Teach AI to Kids: No-Code, Fun, and Interactive

Dot Muncher Game

With the launch of Claude artifacts, my 12-year-old created a Pacman-style game using natural language prompts. He was proud of his creation and loved making it more interesting.

Try it yourself via the link in the comments – no Claude account needed.

AI Quiz

Inspired by Allie K. Miller’s post about creating an AI quiz, and motivated by Paul Roetzer’s insights on embracing AI as a learning tool in schools, I built an interactive quiz to teach my son more about AI.

Using Claude artifacts and natural language prompts, I tailored it to his interests: Roblox, Neffex music, and basketball. Check out the demo below or try the quiz using the links in the comments.

These projects prepare children for future careers where companies will value employees who can guide AIs ethically and effectively to produce meaningful, reliable outputs.

How are you helping kids learn about AI? It takes a village to educate the next generation. Share your ideas below.

AI Confessions: Got AI to Admit When It’s Guessing

AI Confessions: Got AI to Admit When It’s Guessing

Ever feel like AI is too smart for its own good, responding with made-up answers so confidently?

We put it to the test working on an article for travel managers. We wanted fresh and compelling ideas, so we turned to AI. But we didn’t want to blindly trust its suggestions.

So, we came up with a fun way to keep AI (and us) in check. See the key parts of the conversation in the carousel below:

  • We shared our strategy doc with AI, including target persona, pain points, value props, messaging, positioning, and brand voice.

  • We asked AI to suggest article topics.

  • Here’s the key: We had AI rate its own confidence in each idea (High, Medium, Low). For anything less than “High”, we asked what info it needed to be more sure.

Check out the screenshots to see how key parts of the conversation played out. It’s like having AI do a self-check!

This simple approach helps us:

  • Spot where AI might be guessing

  • Know what to double-check

  • Give AI better info to work with

We can certainly take it further:

  • Add number ratings (1-10) for more detail

  • Ask AI to cite sources for high-confidence answers

  • Get AI to point out its own potential biases

It’s not about not trusting AI. It’s about working smarter together.

What do you think? Have you tried something similar? Let’s chat in the comments.

AI Sees Location, I See My Childhood Home

Liza Adams · August 19, 2024 ·

ChatGPT, where in the world is Liza Adams?

Liza Adams appears to be in the Philippines, based on several visual clues from the images:

► Jeepneys and tricycles – iconic Philippine public transportation

► Bustling traffic with familiar signs like “Petron”

► Church interior typical of Philippine Catholic architecture

► Street scenes with vendors and pedestrians common in urban Philippines

All these clues point to Liza Adams being in the Philippines.

ChatGPT is smart but it doesn’t know this is my childhood home, my old neighborhood. Where my brothers and I rode bikes, played with tin cans and flip flops, and ran around until mom’s porch light called us home. Where life was good, then hard. Where we prayed and dreamt.

These jeepneys and tricycles, the church, school uniforms, and the markets – they’re more than just things in a photo. They’re pieces of my past, reminders of the experiences that shaped me. And that’s one of my brothers in some of those photos, a familiar face in these familiar places.

AI can analyze images, but it can’t understand the personal significance behind them. It doesn’t know that shanty homes have now replaced the rusted slides and swings near a creek that we used to play on. It can’t feel the weight of memories or the sense of belonging that comes from growing up in a place.

This isn’t just a location. It’s where my story began, where I became who I am today. Technology may advance, but it will never truly capture the human experience of being connected to a place and its people.

So yes, ChatGPT might describe what’s in the images, but it will never truly know what this place means to me. Because this isn’t just a spot in the Philippines – it’s my childhood home.
